One of the most fulfilling moments of solutions-focused journalism is when it has an effect at the highest level, influencing government policy that will benefit millions of citizens.
TBI has done it before when this story was cited in Parliament in regards to conservation policies. Very recently, TBI did it again when the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court wrote to all concerned districts about our Project Tsangda story, asking other officers to emulate it.
This truly epitomizes solutions-based journalism. Our intent in covering these solutions is to give a limelight to them, because it can always benefit someone else.
We sincerely hope this waste management initiative can benefit many more districts in the country. Good ideas should always be shared, implemented, improved, and shared again. That is a value we hold dear.
What was the Project all about? In a nutshell, the Ladakh region is facing a grave issue of non-biodegradable waste, particularly in the rural areas where there are no proper mechanisms to dispose of garbage. Responding to this concern, the Leh district administration started an initiative towards sustainable waste management in rural and semi-rural areas of the district in December 2017.
This initiative, Project Tsangda, has been a massive success.
It led to the set-up of waste segregation centres across the region. Waste is being repurposed into a range of things, from decorative items to the construction of roads and buildings. Our article also explores why the model in Leh district has succeeded while the SRMC in Bishnah fell apart. By sharing this information, the best solutions will be used and improved upon further.

That’s the movement that you are helping to further. So keep reading, keep watching, and keep sharing. We plan to make more impact than ever, and you’ll be a part of it.
Here’s to 2019!
