Simran Khara’s motivation to create Koparo Clean, an eco-friendly cleaning home-care product brand, was born amid the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.

During that time, she noticed the harsh chemicals in her cleaning products, which were also being used by her daughter who helped in home chores.

Studies, such as one published in Chemosphere, have shown that common household cleaners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which could pose serious health risks like respiratory damage and cancer.

This concern led to the former CEO of Juggernaut Books launching the home-care product brand in February 2021, which boasts of “natural” formulations crafted from plant-based ingredients such as coconuts (kopra).

Teaming up with an R&D lab in Bengaluru, she focused on formulating products that omitted seven chemicals known to be linked to health issues — ammonia, chlorine, phosphates, EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), bleach, triclosan, and artificial colours.

“We don’t make any fake promises. Our products do what any cleaner is supposed to — clean effectively. I just want people to choose better. Read the ingredients, know what you are using, and what you’re letting your children use,” she adds.

Koparo has 30 SKUs (stock-keeping units) and its hero product is the dishwash liquid. Apart from that, their liquid detergent, floor cleaner, and hand wash are fast sellers.

The products are made in factories in Gujarat and Maharashtra, and their bottles are recyclable.

Though initially growth was slow, the brand gained traction in its second year, resonating particularly with millennials, parents, and those leading sustainable lifestyles.

They receive 400 to 500 orders per day on their website and boast a monthly sales figure of Rs 3 crore.

Simran’s business also got a boost when she secured a deal worth Rs 70 lakh for 1 percent equity with Vineeta Singh and Aman Gupta on Shark Tank India season 3.

“We want to spearhead a movement that is better for you, your kids, and the planet. We want to redefine cleaning and become the top choice for cleaners,” she adds.
