Sabyasachi is a name synonymous with Indian fashion royalty. But the man behind the label, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, is a story even more captivating than the exquisite garments he creates.
For several aspirational Indian brides-to-be, Sabyasachi is not just a designer, but an emotion.

Synonymous with splendour, he has further cemented his place in the world of fashion by becoming the first Indian designer to attend the Met Gala 2024.

For Sabyasachi, who was born in Kolkata and had a middle-class upbringing, this invitation comes as an acknowledgement of how far he has come in his journey.
His early life had nurtured a deep appreciation for textiles and their ability to tell stories. Despite facing initial disapproval from his family who saw fashion as an unstable career, his passion burned bright.

Fueled by this passion and a degree from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Sabyasachi embarked on his dream. With a team of three and a mere sum of Rs 20,000 borrowed from his sister, he launched his label.

His debut at the 2002 India Fashion Week marked a turning point.

Recognition followed quickly, with a win at the Mercedes Benz New Asia Fashion Week in Singapore in 2003. This prestigious win opened doors, leading him to workshops with fashion titans like Jean Paul Gaultier and Azzedine Alaia.

But 2006 was truly groundbreaking — Sabyasachi became the first Indian designer ever invited to showcase his collection at Milan Fashion Week, igniting a global spotlight.
